WHAT IS BROWNSEA 22 CAMP?
It is an outdoor adventure for individual Scouts based upon the concept of the original Scout camp conducted by Lord Baden-Powell in 1907 on Brownsea Island. The methods he tested at this camp became the core of the Scouting program. Individuals are placed into patrols of six to eight Scouts from many different troops who are of varied backgrounds and experience levels. The program is carefully organized and led by a staff of experienced adult Scouters and a youth leadership corps of older Scouts selected because of their experience and dedication. During the week, each Scout will learn a TON of Scout skills, how an ideal Scout Troop functions, the Patrol method, as well as the history of Scouting and some of the original games, skills and stories that provided the spark that became the largest youth movement in the world.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND BROWNSEA 22 CAMP?
While Brownsea 22 is a great program for any Scout, it is most beneficial for Scouts that are in the first 1-3 years of their Scouting career and are First Class or lower in rank. The idea of Brownsea 22 is to teach Scouts the Patrol Method and their outdoor Scout skills all while having fun and playing games, just as Baden-Powell intended. Scouts will also get their first tastes of leadership in their assigned Patrol. Each Scout has the opportunity to see how the patrol operates by serving in different leadership roles throughout the week. Brownsea 22 builds great Scouts so that later on National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) can build on those foundations to build great leaders.
CAN SCOUTS EARN ADVANCEMENT AT BROWNSEA 22 CAMP?
Advancement is not formally a part of the Brownsea 22 program however, throughout the week, Scouts will be learning skills in nature, rope work, first aid, orienteering Scoutcraft, and the patrol method. At the end of the week each Scout will be given a summary of the skills that were covered in the course and how they match the requirements for Scout, Tenderfoot, Second Class, and First Class. Scouts may use the list to discuss what they have learned with their Scoutmaster and once they demonstrate the skills at their troop, their troop may sign them off.
IF BROWNSEA 22 CAMP DOESN'T EMPHASIZE ADVANCEMENT, WHAT DOES IT TEACH?
Simple. Brownsea 22 teaches young Scouts how to be exceptional Scouts. This is accomplished by immersing Scouts in a model Troop that is entirely youth-led and runs exclusively on the Patrol Method of Scouting, by turning leadership of that troop over to the participants themselves about halfway through the week, by teaching them useful Scout skills, by singing lots of fun songs, by working hard together, by competing with each other, by building enthusiasm, and ultimately by helping them discover Scout Spirit! We have heard stories of entire new Scout patrols who attended Brownsea 22 and then went on to accomplish incredible feats such as: win overall competitions at subsequent Camporees against patrols of older and more experienced Scouts, and a whole patrol staying together through their Scouting careers and each member earning the rank of Eagle Scout.
DO SCOUTS NEED TO BRING FOOD TO CAMP?
Bringing food to camp is not necessary, but is not disallowed. Storing snacks or treats in tents may invite unwanted visitors, so please use discretion if bringing these types of food to camp. We will eat three nutritious meals each day with some kind of late evening snack (cracker barrel) on most nights. Meals will be served family style in the dining facility at camp. Snacks will also be available for purchase in the trading post during free time most afternoons.
***FOOD ALLERGIES***
If scouts have any food allergies the Brownsea Scoutmaster or Course Director should be notified before arrival at camp. Foods containing peanuts, tree nuts, gluten, eggs, milk products, MSG, and other potential allergens will be served at camp. The kitchen staff at camp will generally make some effort to accommodate scouts with specific dietary needs, but cannot be held accountable for meeting every need for every scout at every meal. If a scout has a food allergy it is advisable to send food to camp with the scout in order to supplement any meals that contain items with offending allergens.

WHEN SHOULD SCOUTS ARRIVE AT CAMP?
Registration for camp will be on Sunday, June 8, 2025 from 5:00pm thru 7:00pm. Brownsea staffers will not be available to receive scouts before 5:00 pm on June 8, so please plan accordingly. If scouts are not able to arrive on Sunday, June 8 please arrive between 8:00am and 10:00am on Monday, June 9. The program will officially begin on Monday morning, so late arrivals should miss very little, if any, important aspects of the Brownsea program.
